Import your subscriber list

Most of your audience is already in Boostmail the moment you install it: your Shopify customers and their email marketing consent sync automatically, and they stay in sync both ways. Import is for everyone else, contacts living in a previous email tool, and the most important rule is to import only the people who actually opted in. A list of 2,000 genuinely consented contacts will outperform a list of 20,000 scraped or purchased addresses, because spam complaints and bounces from non-consenting recipients quietly damage your inbox placement for everyone.
Shopify customers sync automatically
You don’t need to import your Shopify customers. Boostmail syncs them, along with their email marketing consent, and the sync runs in both directions: when a customer subscribes or unsubscribes in Shopify, Boostmail reflects it, and an unsubscribe in Boostmail is reflected back in Shopify. Your Shopify customer segments are imported too.
Why consent matters for imports
When you move a list over from another tool, take a few minutes to remove anyone who is unsubscribed, hard-bounced, or never gave permission. Boostmail doesn’t send a confirmation email on import, because it trusts you already have permission, so this step is on you. It keeps you compliant with regulations like GDPR and CAN-SPAM and protects the sender reputation you depend on to reach the inbox.
Prepare your file
Open Subscribers, choose Import Subscribers, and download the example file. Arrange your CSV to match its columns, with a header row. Email is the key column; the others are optional, such as:
- First name and last name.
- Location details, such as city, state, and country code.
- Other details in the example file, such as time zone, birthdate, and a few custom fields.
Upload and finish
Give the import a segment name, then upload your CSV file or paste the rows as text in the same format. Boostmail removes duplicate email addresses automatically and creates a new segment with the name you chose. A file import isn’t instant, it can take a few minutes, and a notification appears in Boostmail when it’s complete.
Importing contacts never changes your bill: Boostmail charges for emails sent, not per contact.
Next step
With your audience in place, you are ready to send your first campaign. For ongoing list health, see improve your sender reputation.
- 1
Check what already synced from Shopify
Your Shopify customers and their email marketing consent sync into Boostmail automatically, and stay in sync both ways. You only need to import contacts that live outside Shopify, for example in a previous email tool.
- 2
Export and clean your contacts
Export your audience from your old tool as a CSV. Before uploading, remove anyone who is unsubscribed, bounced, or never opted in. Importing only people who genuinely subscribed protects your deliverability and keeps you compliant with anti-spam and privacy rules.
- 3
Match the example file's format
In Boostmail, open Subscribers and choose Import Subscribers. Download the example file and arrange your CSV to match its columns. Email is the key column; first name, last name, location and the other columns are optional.
- 4
Name the new segment
Give the import a segment name. Boostmail creates a new segment with that name containing the imported contacts, so you can target them in a campaign later.
- 5
Upload the file or paste the rows
Upload your CSV file, or paste the rows as text in the same format. Confirm that everyone in the list opted in to receive marketing from you. A file import runs in the background, and a notification appears in Boostmail when it's complete.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to import my Shopify customers?
- No. Shopify customers and their email marketing consent sync into Boostmail automatically, and the sync works both ways: a subscribe or unsubscribe in Shopify is reflected in Boostmail, and the other way around. Import is only for contacts outside Shopify.
- Why can't I just import everyone?
- Emailing people who never opted in drives spam complaints and hard bounces, which damage your sender reputation and can get your sends blocked for everyone on your list. Importing only consented contacts is both a legal requirement in many regions and the single best thing you can do for long-term deliverability. Boostmail doesn't send confirmation emails on import, because it trusts that you already have permission.
- Do imported contacts cost anything?
- No. Boostmail never charges per contact, so importing contacts doesn't change your bill. You only pay for emails sent, and the first 20,000 emails every 30 days are free.
- What happens to duplicate rows?
- Boostmail automatically removes duplicate email addresses from the list, so you don't create duplicate subscribers.
- Do imported contacts get the welcome email?
- No. The welcome email is triggered by new customers from your Shopify store. To greet an imported list, send them a regular campaign using the segment created by the import.
