Set up an abandoned-cart campaign

Reviewed by Eran Betzalel, founder · 2026-09-30

An abandoned-cart campaign automatically emails shoppers who leave items in their cart without checking out, and it is one of the most valuable triggered campaigns a store can run, because studies of cart abandonment consistently find that a large share of online carts are never completed. In Boostmail it is a triggered campaign: you design one reminder email, set a delay and a frequency, and Boostmail sends up to 3 reminders per cart, with orders attributed back to the campaign.

How it works

Boostmail listens to your Shopify store’s carts and checkouts. When a shopper leaves items behind without completing the order, and Boostmail knows their email and they’re subscribed to your marketing, the triggered campaign starts. The first reminder goes out after your delay, and follow-ups go out at your frequency, up to 3 reminders in total. Reminders stop as soon as the shopper completes the order, or when the cart has gone more than 7 days without an update.

Designing the reminder

The same email design is used for each reminder, so write it to work as a friendly nudge whether it’s the first or the third. Keep it simple and helpful: the shopper’s cart items (product name, image, price and quantity) are filled in automatically, and you add a prominent call to action plus reassurance such as free-shipping thresholds, easy returns, or a customer review.

Choosing the timing

  • Delay, the wait before the first reminder, in hours or days. A few hours after abandonment is a common starting point, while intent is fresh.
  • Frequency, how often follow-ups go out, for example once a day.
  • Sending hours, the time zone and daily time windows when emails may go out, so reminders don’t land in the middle of the night.

The Abandoned Cart template starts you at a 4-hour delay with one day between reminders, which you can change. Three reminders is the maximum, which is also a sensible ceiling: over-messaging drives unsubscribes and spam complaints, which hurt your sender reputation.

Before you activate

Send yourself a test and confirm the product images, prices and links render correctly, then activate the campaign. After it is live, check the campaign report for sends, opens, clicks and attributed revenue, and adjust the delay, frequency or copy based on what converts.

A welcome email is a natural companion to cart recovery. See welcome email to greet new subscribers the moment they join.

  1. 1

Start from the Abandoned Cart template

In Boostmail, open Create and choose Abandoned Cart. This creates a triggered campaign set to the Abandoned Cart event, so you are not building any logic from scratch.

  2. 2

    Confirm the trigger

In the campaign details, check that the triggered event is Abandoned Cart. Boostmail picks up carts and checkouts from your Shopify store, and a cart qualifies when the shopper left items behind without completing the order and Boostmail knows their email.

  3. 3

    Design the reminder email

Use the drag-and-drop editor to remind the shopper what they left behind. The shopper's cart items (product name, image, price and quantity) are filled in for each cart. Add a clear call to action and reassurance like shipping or returns info.

  4. 4

    Set the delay

Choose how long to wait before the first reminder, in hours or days (at least one hour). Soon enough that intent is fresh, but not so fast it feels pushy.

  5. 5

    Set the frequency

Choose how often follow-up reminders go out. Boostmail sends at most 3 reminder emails per cart, and stops reminding once the cart has gone more than 7 days without an update.

  6. 6

Choose sending hours, test, and activate

Pick your time zone and the hours of the day when emails may be sent, send yourself a test, then activate the campaign. From that point it runs automatically for every qualifying cart.

Frequently asked questions

How many reminders does Boostmail send?
Up to 3 reminder emails per cart. The first goes out after the delay you choose, and follow-ups go out at the frequency you set. If the cart hasn't been updated for more than 7 days, reminders stop for that cart.
Do reminders stop if the shopper buys?
Yes. Once the shopper completes the order, Boostmail stops the remaining reminders for that cart, so nobody gets a 'you left something behind' email after they've already bought.
Who receives abandoned-cart reminders?
Shoppers whose email Boostmail knows from the cart or checkout and who are subscribed to your email marketing. Consent follows your Shopify customer data, which syncs both ways with Boostmail.
Can I see how much revenue the campaign brings in?
Yes. Boostmail attributes orders back to the campaign, so the campaign report shows the revenue it drove alongside sends, opens and clicks.
Should I offer a discount in the reminder?
Not necessarily. Many carts are recovered by a simple, timely reminder with no discount at all. If you do offer one, make sure it fits your margins and doesn't train shoppers to abandon carts on purpose.
