Boostmail as a Klaviyo alternative

If you are leaving Klaviyo, the honest reason is almost always cost at scale, not quality, Klaviyo is genuinely good, with a 4.7★ rating across 3,332 Shopify reviews. The problem is its pricing climbs with your contact count: a bill that is fine at 1,000 contacts reaches roughly $150/mo by 10,000 and keeps rising. Boostmail is the recommended switch for stores that need email, not SMS, and want to stop paying for list size. It never charges per contact: the first 20,000 emails every 30 days are free, and 10,000 contacts receiving 4 emails each per 30 days cost $15. Keep every subscriber. Pay only for what you send.

This guide is for merchants who have already decided to move and want to do it well. It covers why people leave Klaviyo (in their own words), which alternatives are genuinely worth considering, including ones that are not Boostmail, how the feature coverage compares, and exactly what the migration involves. Switch only if the trade-off fits your store: if you rely on Klaviyo's SMS, multi-step flows or predictive analytics, that is what you would be giving up.

Why merchants leave Klaviyo

The pattern is consistent: stores adopt Klaviyo for its power, then re-evaluate when the bill scales faster than the value they extract from the advanced features. The cost driver is structural, Klaviyo prices on total contacts, so a growing or seasonally large list raises your monthly fee even if your sending volume is flat. The criticisms below are verbatim from real Klaviyo users; we do not paraphrase them into our own claims.

“Powerful but the learning curve is steep and it is overkill for a small store.”

The cost-at-scale point, plainly: as of 30 September 2026, Klaviyo runs about $30/mo at 1,000 contacts and about $150/mo at 10,000, per its Shopify listing. Boostmail never charges per contact. With each contact receiving 4 emails per 30 days, 1,000 contacts cost $0 (inside the free 20,000 emails) and 10,000 contacts cost $15. A long tail of quiet addresses costs nothing to keep on your list; you pay only when you email them.

The Klaviyo alternatives worth considering

Boostmail is our recommendation for cost-driven switchers who only need email, but it is not the only sensible option. Here is an honest read on the field so you can pick the one that fits your store.

Boostmail, pay per send with no per-contact charge

Boostmail covers the email jobs most stores use Klaviyo for: campaigns built in a drag-and-drop editor, segmentation by engagement, purchase history, tags and location, and welcome and abandoned cart emails with revenue attribution. It never charges per contact, the first 20,000 emails every 30 days are free, and Shopify customers and email consent sync both ways. Deliverability basics are built in: your own authenticated sending domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), automatic bounce and complaint suppression, and one-click unsubscribe. We build it, and we disclose that. It is the better fit for cost and simplicity; Klaviyo remains stronger on SMS, multi-step flows, predictive analytics and integration breadth.

  • Omnisend, closest like-for-like, email + SMS bundled

Omnisend is the most direct Klaviyo substitute for stores that want email, SMS, and push in one tool. It is ecommerce-native, highly rated, and its pre-built automations work out of the box. It still prices by contact count, so the cost-at-scale concern that pushes merchants off Klaviyo applies to Omnisend too, if to a lesser degree at the lower tiers.

  • Avada Email Marketing, generous free tier, budget-friendly

Avada is the value option: a free plan with 12,000 emails a month and unlimited emails on paid tiers that start lower than Klaviyo. It is a sensible landing spot for a smaller store whose main grievance with Klaviyo is the monthly bill, though its analytics and segmentation are lighter.

  • Privy, strongest if on-site list growth is the priority

Privy is worth a look if the job you most want done is capturing email addresses on-site, its popups and forms are mature and well reviewed. As an all-round ESP it is less complete than Klaviyo, so it suits stores that pair it with another sending tool or have simpler campaign needs.

How to migrate from Klaviyo to Boostmail

Switching email service providers is mostly a careful, ordered process rather than a hard technical lift. The two steps that matter most are preserving consent on your contacts and re-authenticating your sending domain, get those right and the rest is straightforward.

  1. Export your contacts and segments from Klaviyo

In Klaviyo, export your profiles (Lists & Segments → export to CSV) and note the segments you rely on. Capture consent status for each contact: only people who opted in should receive marketing email after you move, so keep that record intact when you import them elsewhere.

  2. Install Boostmail and bring your subscribers across

Add Boostmail from the Shopify App Store (free to install). Boostmail syncs your Shopify customers and their email marketing consent in both directions, so a subscribe or unsubscribe in Shopify or Boostmail is reflected in the other. For subscribers who exist only in Klaviyo, upload your CSV into a Boostmail segment. Then rebuild your key segments by engagement, purchase history, Shopify tags or location.

  3. Set up your triggered campaigns

Boostmail has three triggered campaigns: a welcome email for new subscribers, abandoned cart (up to 3 reminders per cart on your chosen delay, with orders attributed back to the campaign), and a coupon reminder for shoppers who grab a coupon in BoostPop, our separate popup app. Set those up first. Multi-step Klaviyo flows such as browse abandonment, post-purchase or win-back have no direct equivalent in Boostmail, so decide whether regular campaigns to a segment can cover them. Keep your Klaviyo flows live until cutover so nothing lapses.

  4. Re-authenticate your sending domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)

Authenticate the same sending domain in Boostmail by adding its SPF, DKIM, and DMARC DNS records at your registrar. This is the single most important step for deliverability: sending from an unauthenticated domain after a switch is the fastest way to land in spam. Boostmail shows the records to add and your sender domain's verification status.

  5. Ramp up and watch your results

Send to your most engaged subscribers first and increase volume over a few days rather than mailing your whole list at once from a newly authenticated domain. Watch delivered, bounce and complaint numbers in your campaign stats; Boostmail suppresses bounced and complaining addresses automatically.

  6. Cut over and decommission Klaviyo

Once a few campaigns and your triggered campaigns are sending cleanly from Boostmail, move your signup capture over (Shopify's own signups sync through, and BoostPop feeds new subscribers straight into Boostmail), then pause Klaviyo sending. Keep the Klaviyo account read-only for a billing cycle so you can reference historical reporting, then cancel once you are confident nothing still depends on it.

More on the technical side: how Boostmail handles deliverability and setting up triggered campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

Is Boostmail a good Klaviyo alternative?
For Shopify stores whose main reason for leaving Klaviyo is cost, and who only need email, yes. Boostmail covers email campaigns, segmentation, welcome and abandoned cart emails with revenue attribution, and two-way Shopify customer and consent sync, and it never charges per contact. It is not a like-for-like replacement: Boostmail has no SMS, no AI content, no visual flow builder, and none of Klaviyo's predictive analytics or its large integration directory. If you depend on any of those, weigh that before switching.
Why do merchants switch away from Klaviyo?
The most common trigger is price as the contact list grows: Klaviyo's cost scales with contacts, so a bill that is reasonable at 1,000 contacts (about $30/mo) climbs steeply by 10,000 (about $150/mo) and beyond. Klaviyo itself is well rated, 4.7★ across 3,332 reviews, so this is usually about cost and complexity rather than a quality problem. The quotes on this page are from real Klaviyo users.
Will I lose my email history or subscribers when I switch?
You keep your subscribers. Your Shopify customers and their email consent sync into Boostmail, and you can import anyone else from a CSV exported from Klaviyo. Historical campaign reporting stays inside Klaviyo, which is why we recommend keeping that account read-only for a billing cycle after you cut over. Going forward, Boostmail reports on everything it sends, and because it syncs Shopify customer and order data, purchase-based segments rebuild quickly.
How long does migrating from Klaviyo to Boostmail take?
For a typical store, the hands-on work is a few hours spread across a few days: an hour or two to bring contacts across and set up your welcome and abandoned cart campaigns, then domain authentication and a few days of gradually increasing volume before you fully cut over. The pace is set by that ramp, not the setup.
Is Boostmail cheaper than Klaviyo?
For most lists, yes, because Boostmail never charges per contact. As of 30 September 2026, Klaviyo is about $150/mo at 10,000 contacts. On Boostmail, 10,000 contacts receiving 4 emails each per 30 days cost $15, and the first 20,000 emails every 30 days are always free. Your Boostmail bill follows how much you send, not how many contacts you keep, so a list you email often costs more than one you email rarely. Always confirm current pricing on each vendor's listing.
